Pristy vs. Alfresco Enterprise

Licence, cost, sovereignty and reversibility: how Pristy compares to the commercial Alfresco Content Services Enterprise offering.

Same foundation, two models

Alfresco Content Services Enterprise is Hyland’s commercial offering. It runs on the same content repository as the Community version — the one Pristy is built on.

So the question isn’t really “which software stores your documents best.” It’s under what conditions you use it: how much the right to use it costs, who can read and modify the code, where your data lives, and what’s left if you ever decide to leave.

The comparison

Alfresco Content Services Enterprise is Hyland’s commercial offering, built on the same repository as the Community version. Pristy starts from that same free/open-source foundation and completes it with its own modules, also under a free/open-source licence. The comparison is therefore less about the repository’s features than about the model: licence, cost, sovereignty and reversibility.

Where Alfresco Enterprise does better

A comparison where every mark leans the same way doesn’t deserve your trust. Here, honestly, are the cases where Hyland’s offering stays ahead.

Certified governance. Alfresco offers a records-management module compliant with international archiving standards, with archiving of probative value (WORM): the document can no longer be modified once filed. We cover archiving and transfer, but without that certification. If your organisation is contractually bound to it, the question is worth asking before anything else.

Microsoft 365 integration. If your teams live in Teams and Office online, Alfresco Enterprise offers a native integration we don’t match: with us, the link to the Microsoft suite goes through the SharePoint Protocol connector, which is more basic. Conversely, if your trajectory is one of sovereignty and moving away from American suites, that’s exactly what you’re trying to get away from.

AI-based automatic classification. Hyland offers content-intelligence and advanced classification features. We automate character recognition and processing on import, without going that far.

Very large scale. Hyland has experience deploying to tens of thousands of users that we don’t have today, and offers a contractually certified Kubernetes deployment.

On the other hand, if your needs fit a local authority, a mid-sized organisation or a public institution, these advantages come at a high price for what they actually bring.

What a free/open-source licence changes

You don’t pay for the right to exist

With us, there’s no user counter that triggers a renegotiation. You pay for hosting, integration and support — never for permission to use the software. Adding fifty users doesn’t change your licence bill, because there is no licence bill.

You can leave

That’s the most uncomfortable property to guarantee, and the most important. The code is public, the data is in open formats, and nothing in the licence stops you from carrying on without us. Our job is to make you want to stay, not to stop you from leaving.

What we develop for you benefits everyone

Custom development funded by one customer is given back to the free/open-source product. You’re not maintaining a patch alone: it’s maintained along with everything else, and other users test it for you.
